Nursing intervention and adherence to chemotherapy in cancer patients after consultation

Adherence to chemotherapy treatment is a challenge in cancer care, in which educational nursing intervention plays an important role. Objective: The objective was to evaluate nursing involvement and its relationship with adherence to chemotherapy treatment in patients following consultation at the Julio Enrique Paredes Hospital. Method: A mixed, descriptive, and applied study was conducted with a sample of 98 patients over the age of 18 who had received more than six cycles of chemotherapy, in addition to nursing staff in the area; a structured survey and direct observation guide were used. Results: The results showed that 79% did not consider discontinuing treatment, 94% stated that the education received promoted therapeutic adherence, and 91% felt capable of self-care; however, structural limitations were identified in the postconsultation period. Conclusion: It was concluded that the educational intervention and family support promoted therapeutic adherence and quality of care.
