Abstract

Objective: To identify the relationship maintained by nursing professionals in the support of the critically ill patient's family member. Methods: Descriptive observational study. Results: 55% received indications on the care that can be provided to the accompanying family member, since the staff cannot be 100% focused on a single patient. Conclusion: Family-related barriers have increased over time. Family-related obstacles may not be easily overcome, as every family dealing with a dying member in an ICU has probably not previously experienced a similar situation. Poor communication with physicians was the main obstacle observed by NCCs during end-of-life care in the ICU, followed by physicians giving false hope.
