Abstract

Objective: To analyze the advantages and disadvantages of self-ligating and conventional brackets in orthodontic friction reduction. Methods: A systematic review was carried out of studies published between 2014 and 2024, selected using the PRISMA method in databases such as Scopus, PubMed and Proquest. Twenty-one articles on friction and effectiveness in gap closure were analyzed. Results: Self-ligating brackets significantly reduced friction and improved treatment efficiency, although they presented limitations in the correction of rotations. Conclusions: New orthodontic technologies, such as self-ligating brackets, offer benefits in friction reduction, but treatment success depends on the skill of the orthodontist and proper choice of devices.
