Abstract

Objective: To review the literature on the relationship between malocclusion and temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD). Methods: A search was performed in electronic databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, ProQuest and others, using the keywords: Malocclusion, Temporomandibular disorders, and TMJ. Articles in English and Spanish published since 2013 were included. After applying inclusion criteria, 227 articles were reviewed, of which 22 were selected for detailed analysis. Results: The review revealed that malocclusion does not directly cause temporomandibular disorders. However, it was identified that malocclusion is accompanied by factors such as emotional, environmental and hormonal stress, which may influence the development of TMD. Conclusions:  Although malocclusion has been considered a trigger for TMD, this relationship is more complex and depends on multiple additional factors not directly linked to malocclusions.
