Analysis of risk factors and development of periodontal disease in older adults

Objective: to analyze the risk factors and mechanisms of development of gingivitis and periodontitis in older adult populations in different regions. Method: Documentary descriptive, 15 scientific articles published in PubMed and located in Scopus, Web of Science were reviewed. Conclusion: The present study confirmed the presence of a variety of risk factors, including osteoporosis, diabetes, hormonal changes in women, age, socioeconomic status and lifestyle. These elements have a negative impact on the periodontal health of older people. These findings underline the urgent need to develop comprehensive public health policies and strategies aimed at improving access to specialized oral health services.
