Abstract

Objective: To analyze the role of aquaporin 4 in cytotoxic edema due to severe traumatic brain injury. Method: Descriptive documentary, 15 scientific articles related to the subject were reviewed, located in PubMed, Scielo, Latindex 2.0. Conclusion: AQP-4 can serve as a therapeutic target because if its function is potentiated it significantly reduces cytotoxic edema. The inflammatory process generated in severe TBI is increased due to pathological conditions that increase this process which generates greater edema.
