Objective: to analyze nursing care in surgical site infection in intensive care patients after cardiac surgery. Method: Documentary descriptive. Results: There are factors that influence surgical site infection, so they can be classified as preoperative (smoking, BMI greater than 40, diabetes, inadequate preoperative preparation, among others), intraoperative (depending on the type of surgery, prolongation of cardiopulmonary bypass time > 150 min., extracorporeal circulation. Conclusion: It was evidenced that the nursing interventions provided to a patient in critical condition after heart surgery, start from the pre to the postoperative period. The nursing staff in charge of the care of the critical cardiac patient in the postoperative period in the intensive care unit must know the risk factors and their management, being knowledge based on evidence and the expertise of the nursing staff fundamental.
