Metformin and gestational diabetes. Possible therapeutic relationship

Objective: To understand the effects of metformin as a treatment for gestational diabetes. Method: A bibliographic review of scientific documents such as SciELO, Scopus, PubMed and Google Scholar, of the 34 available articles, was carried out. Results and conclusions: In this bibliographical review, it was explored how metformin constitutes a new therapeutic option for the treatment of GD, in addition to explaining the therapeutic objectives that are sought with an adequate treatment and the importance of making an opportune diagnosis. In the pathophysiology of GD, the alteration in glucose tolerance stands out, which varies in intensity depending on the factors that encompass the case of each patient, this alteration can trigger adverse consequences for both the mother and the fetus, long and short term; this makes your postpartum check-up essential to check if the anomaly persists and start treatment.
