Objectives: To interpret emotional exhaustion in nursing staff in intensive care units through systematic review of scientific literature. Methods: Observational, retrospective and cross-sectional study through systematic review following PRISMA 2020 methodology. The search was conducted in Google Scholar during January 2023, selecting articles published between 2014-2022 with full text and free access. Descriptors used: "emotional exhaustion" OR "nursing" OR "intensive care unit". Specific inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied. Results: From 20,700 initial records, 10 articles that met the established criteria were selected. Studies report high emotional exhaustion prevalence between 8.1% and 64.9% in ICU nursing staff. The most relevant risk factors identified were: age (range 32-52 years), female gender, work experience over 16 years, and characteristics of the critical work environment.
