Abstract

Objective: To analyze the ethical considerations of the vegetative state. Method: Descriptive documentary. Conclusion: Health professionals should guarantee the respect and dignity of patients with SVSR, follow ethical and legal principles to make decisions that should be chosen in conjunction with legal representatives and family members, avoid discrimination and ensure that the patient's rights and preferences are respected, even when they cannot express them directly. The dilemma of deciding whether to maintain or withdraw medical care in patients in a chronic vegetative state arises. This involves ethical considerations about the benefit and proportionality of treatments, the perceived quality of life, and the patient's prior expressed wishes.
