Abstract

Objective: To reflect on genetic diseases in the Salcedo canton of Ecuador. Method: Documentary descriptive type. Results: Canton Salcedo particularly reports diseases such as Microtia with a prevalence of 0.02%, Unspecified polydactyly 0.03%, Tongue malformations 0.08%, Down syndrome 0.08%, Mouth malformations 0.02% and Achondroplasia 0.001%. Conclusion: Genetic counseling should be part of the daily professional practice of the pediatrician as a key element in the intervention of those affected by orphan diseases, since he is the first to have contact with the child population and it is essential that he manages to transmit useful information and correctly interpret the accessible diagnostic methods and treatment options and to the fulfillment of health policies.
