Abstract

ABSTRACT

The objective was to analyze the risk factors for post-coital cystitis in young women, with emphasis on determinants other than Escherichia coli and on the Ecuadorian context. A systematic review was conducted according to the PRISMA statement, with a documentary approach and content analysis, in PubMed/MEDLINE, SciELO, Redalyc and Google Scholar; 14 studies were included. Frequency of sexual intercourse, spermicide use, a new sexual partner, urinary tract infection before age 15 and a maternal history were associated with a higher risk of recurrence. Loss of vaginal lactobacilli, periurethral colonization and uropathogens such as Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Klebsiella and Proteus broaden the causal spectrum. In Ecuador, E. coli predominates, with high resistance to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. It is concluded that prevention should integrate sexual and contraceptive counseling, care of the vaginal microbiota, screening for sexually transmitted infections and urine culture with accurate identification.
