Abstract

Objective: To analyze acanthosis nigricans and multiple skin tags as cutaneous markers of insulin resistance through a systematic review. Method: The study was structured using the PECO framework: adults aged 18 years and older; clinical presence of acanthosis nigricans, multiple skin tags, or a combination of both; absence of the corresponding sign or a lower number of lesions as a comparison; and insulin resistance. The search was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, LILACS, and SciELO. Results: Acanthosis nigricans showed the most consistent association with metabolic indicators consistent with insulin resistance. The evidence regarding multiple skin tags and the coexistence of both signs pointed in the same direction but was more variable. Conclusion: The data showed that insulin resistance and acanthosis nigricans are more closely related. The results regarding the simultaneous presence of both signs and multiple skin tags were consistent, although more variable.
