Abstract

Objective: To compare the incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients undergoing nephrectomy for renal cancer using a laparoscopic and open approach. Methods: Observational and retrospective study in 133 patients undergoing unilateral nephrectomy. AKI was defined according to the KDIGO criteria. Results: Radical nephrectomy accounted for 60.2 % of the procedures and open surgery for 88.7 %. A significant association was found between radical nephrectomy and the occurrence of AKI, while the open approach showed a higher frequency of AKI than laparoscopy. Multivariate analysis identified radical nephrectomy as an independent predictor of acute kidney injury (p = 0.003). Conclusion: Radical nephrectomy increases the risk of developing AKI compared to partial nephrectomy. Laparoscopic surgery showed a favorable trend for the preservation of renal function. Prospective studies of larger sample sizes are needed to confirm these findings.
