Nursing intervention to strengthen the self-care of diabetic patients at the Basic Hospital Guaranda, Ecuador

Objective: To assess self-care among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus attended in the Outpatient Clinic of Hospital Básico IESS‑Guaranda in 2024 and to design an educational plan to strengthen self-care practices. Method: Direct observation and administration of questionnaires to patients and nursing staff within the CAPSTONE methodology; these inputs were used to diagnose the situation and to develop an educational program and a training plan for the team. Results: The assessment revealed insufficient patient education, time constraints among staff, and low adherence to recommendations; in response, training for nursing staff and a patient‑directed program were proposed. Conclusion: An educational intervention is necessary to improve self‑care and reduce diabetes‑related complications; follow‑up is recommended to sustain the effects.
