Abstract

Objective: To analyze the prevalence of oral habits in children from 6 to 12 years of age and their relationship with the appearance of malocclusions. Method: Descriptive documentary. Conclusion: Oral habits in infancy, such as digital sucking, prolonged pacifier use and mouth breathing, are strongly associated with the development of malocclusions in children aged 6 to 12 years. Scientific evidence highlights that the persistence of these habits beyond the age of three years significantly increases the risk of occlusal alterations in the vertical, sagittal and transverse planes, feeding patterns, in particular the duration of breastfeeding and bottle use, influence the configuration of dental occlusion. These findings underscore the importance of early detection and timely intervention in these habits to prevent the development of malocclusions.
