Objective: To analyze the prevalence of self-medication in university students. Method: Descriptive documentary. Conclusion: Self-medication can lead to premature discontinuation of treatment, inadequate doses and prolonged use of medicines, resulting in serious adverse effects and medical complications. Factors such as the ease of access to medicines, the perception that certain symptoms do not require medical consultation, and the influence of advertising and recommendations from family and friends contribute to this practice. Antibiotic misuse is of particular concern because of its contribution to bacterial resistance.
