Abstract

Objective: To identify the prevalence of self-medication patterns in the adult population with respiratory symptoms who go to neighborhood pharmacies in sector II Santa Martha, Santo Domingo de lo Tsáchilas, Ecuador. Method: Descriptive observational study. Results: The family of medicines with the highest consumption (32.5%) was antibiotics, followed by analgesics (18.2%) and antipyretics (14.8%). The inappropriate use of antibiotics directly contributes to the appearance of antimicrobial resistance. 77% of the population surveyed purchased generic medicines because they were more affordable. Conclusion: The research highlights the habits of self-medication in the community of Santo Domingo, where symptoms such as fever and cough, often associated with simple viral illnesses, lead to indiscriminate use of medicines, especially antibiotics. This behavior is fueled by the affordability of generic drugs.
