Abstract

Objective: To analyze orthodontic treatment as a risk factor for gingivitis in young and adult patients. Method: Descriptive documentary, the population was 15 scientific articles published in Scielo, Scopus and PubMed. Conclusion: Orthodontic treatment, although fundamental for the correction of malocclusions and the improvement of dental health and aesthetics, represents a significant risk factor for the development of gingivitis in young and adult patients. Orthodontic appliances facilitate plaque accumulation and alter the oral microbiota, which increases susceptibility to gingival inflammation. To mitigate this risk, it is essential that dental health professionals implement rigorous oral hygiene strategies, provide appropriate patient education and perform continuous periodontal health monitoring during treatment.
