Dental specialties selected by dental students: case: Universidad Regional Autónoma de los Andes, Ecuador

Abstract

Objective: To identify the dental specialties most chosen by students in the last semesters of their degree, in this case the ninth semester of the Universidad Regional Autónoma de los Andes (Uniandes). Method: Observational, descriptive type. Results: 23.7% (n=19) of the sample decided to specialize in maxillofacial surgery, 22.5% (n=18) in orthodontics, 13.8% (n=11) in endodontics, 8.8% (n=7) in pediatric dentistry, 7.5% (n=6) in implant dentistry, 3.8% (n=3) in periodontics, 3.8% (n=3) in oral rehabilitation, 1.2% (n=1) in oral surgery and 13.8% (n=11) in none. Conclusion: The dental specialties most in demand by ninth semester dental students were maxillofacial surgery and orthodontics. However, there were students who chose not to specialize.
