Objective: To analyze the use of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid as an irrigant in root canal treatment. Method: Descriptive documentary with review of 15 articles located in PubMed database. Conclusion: The main task of endodontics is to disinfect the dentinal tubules accurately, effectively and optimally for the correct placement of fillings and the prevention of post-treatment reinfections. The mechanical instruments used in endodontics, both manual and mechanical, induce an uneven amorphous formation and granular layer on the surface of the root dentin, known as smear. This topical layer is composed of organic and inorganic elements of the tooth, including necrotic pulp tissue debris, bacteria and hard particles.
