Nursing care for patients with nausea and vomiting undergoing chemotherapy treatment

Introduction: Chemotherapy is a cancer treatment that involves administering drugs that act at the cellular level, producing adverse effects such as nausea and vomiting. Objective: To identify nursing care for the prevention and control of these symptoms through a literature review. Method: It is a qualitative, descriptive, and applied study. Books, postgraduate theses, and scientific articles published in journals indexed in PubMed, SciELO, or Elsevier were analyzed. Result: The main nursing care interventions were identified, including the administration of prophylactic antiemetics, promotion of an appropriate diet, and education in self-care guidelines. Additionally, the assessment of triggering factors such as frequency, intensity, and duration was considered, as well as the management of complications that may arise from the treatment. Conclution: Complementary therapies such as acupuncture, acupressure, aromatherapy, hypnosis, music therapy, or muscle relaxation are then promoted to reduce symptoms, which are related to psychological and emotional components.
