The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between anxiety and depression with academic performance in adolescent high school students of an educational institution in the district of Trujillo, Peru. A non-probabilistic convenience sampling was carried out, selecting 164 students between 13 and 17 years of age, 77 males and 87 females. Two instruments were applied: the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) with a reliability level of 0.951 and 0.955 respectively. The results with Rho Spearman showed that anxiety and depression are significantly related (p<0.01) with academic performance, presenting negative correlation coefficients -0.653 for anxiety and -0.898 for depression, i.e. the higher the anxiety or depression, the lower the academic performance. In conclusion, it is essential to address the mental health of adolescent students as an integral part of their academic and personal development.
